Champlin's Marina & Resort on Block Island
June 09, 2022—- I had never before been to Rhode Island nor heard of Block Island, so I jumped at the opportunity to get out of town and take a mini-vacation to Champlin’s Marina and Resort, New England’s largest resort and marina. I didn’t know what to expect, nor did I realize how much I really needed this trip.
GETTING THERE
I took an Amtrak train from Washington DC to New London, CT; then took the high-speed ferry to Block Island. I enjoyed the entire journey as I was able to appreciate the scenery in the many states the train passed through, as well as relax on the large ferry as it whooshed through the waters to get us to Block Island.
ABOUT CHAMPLIN’S MARINA & RESORT
Champlin’s is a historic property on Block Island and the largest resort and marinas in all of New England. It was fully renovated in 2021 and reopened to visitors for the season in May 2022. It’s comprised of several buildings, 42 guest rooms, 4,700+ linear square feet of dock space on the harbor for boats to dock (get a slip and stay here, boat owners!), a full-service deep-water marina, private beach, pool with poolside service, grills to cook on, and onsite parking. Views of the Great Salt Pond are vast and beautiful!
I stayed in room #308, which is located near the front desk, and was so pleasantly surprised at how refreshed and updated it is. Room #308 features modern shiplap paneling to match the property’s feel, a back-lit mirror vanity and spacious frameless shower in the bathroom, large flat-screen TV, and a mini-fridge. My friend stayed in room #506 which is above the Galley House restaurant and has views of the Great Salt Pond as well as the property’s pool (the pool is set to reopen in 2023).
WEDDINGS AND SPECIAL EVENTS
During my stay, I was invited to enjoy an onsite wedding showcase which really doubled as a reception/party! A large marquee/elevated tent has been erected for special activities, onsite events, weddings, and other celebrations and remains set up for the entire season. From this tent, one has direct views of the water, which makes it the perfect location to celebrate and watch the sunrise/sunset.
I noshed on the most delicious hors d’oeuvres and sipped on specialty drinks made especially for the day by Champlin’s, met with local vendors, and just took the day in. Under-tent lights were illuminated, the day was beautiful and bright, the food kept coming, drinks kept flowing, and the DJ played music that made me want to dance. I almost did…
Lé Lauriér Bridal, handmade couture bridal wear designed by Lauren Holovka, presented a few of their beautiful gowns and now I’d like to buy some of their bespoke couture bridal robes— they’re whimsical and absolutely breathtaking. If you’re looking for a custom dress and/or bridal wear to feel like an absolute queen, I highly recommend Lé Lauriér.
SERVICE
Hospitality should feel pleasant and welcoming. One of the reasons I decided to blog about Champlin’s isn’t only because it’s a vibe—- it’s because the service and people here are incredible. I’ve not had such thoughtful service in quite some time that I almost forgot it exists!
• Upon check-in, I really had to use the restroom but didn’t want to until I got to my room. Check-in was quick and easy, but when the agent realized I was in a rush to get to my room, she scooped up my luggage (it was heavy!) and helped me run to my room. She quickly unlocked the door, placed my luggage down, and let me be on my way. I was blown away immediately!
• One of the managers noticed I didn’t eat meat, so she prepared a pescetarian/vegetarian hors d’oeuvres platter for me which blew my mind—- how kind and thoughtful!
• Front desk agents checked on me and helped me move luggage once again over the weekend and we had such a nice conversation while walking from point A to point B. The next morning, I ran outside to explore the property and heard, “Good morning, Elizabeth! How are you?”, and was stunned—- they remembered my name after only one short conversation! They paused to wait for my answer! Someone give everyone a raise!
• On my way down to the café near the marina, I was complimented on my dress (that made me feel like a million bucks) and greeted with the sunniest of dispositions.
• Upon departure, our luggage was mounted into the shuttle which would take us to the ferry, we had a fun little drive to the pier, and our heavy luggage was once again gently handled out of the shuttle and safely into our hands. These two powerhouse ladies didn’t just handle my 50lb. bag, but also everyone else’s heavy bags as well. Not one grunt or complaint— rather big smiles and wishes for us to return again soon. Can I stay here???
WHY I NEEDED THIS TRIP
You can’t go wrong with sun, water, sky, food, and fun—- but I had forgotten how to slow down and really appreciate time, nature, and the company of people who really desire good things for you. I am a late riser by nature, but woke up early on my last day at Champlin’s to watch the sunrise, take deep breaths, and thank the universe for bringing me here. It was quiet. The only sound I could hear was the boats gently bumping the edge of the docks, birds splashing in the water as they bathed themselves, and seagull trills. The sun rose brilliantly above the water, the water shimmered and reflected the sun’s marigold rays, and the sky was the most gorgeous shade of light cerulean. This is peace. I will return.
THINGS TO DO ON BLOCK ISLAND
Block Island is relatively small and located south of mainland Rhode Island. It features an 1800s lighthouse that sits atop the Mohegan Bluffs. Champlin’s offers many activities for guests (including enjoying their famous Mudslide at their onsite bar, delish affogatos served in their Sugar Shack, games, and other entertainment), as well as allows guests to borrow one of their many bikes to discover the island.
Most people on the road outside of Champlin’s ride bikes— it’s both cool and very normal. The ride around the entire island is about 11 miles around and offers scenic views of the bluffs, rocky beaches, sandy beaches, and more:
• Mohegan Bluffs: Famous landmark of the final battleground of the Manisses and Mohegan tribes
• National Wildlife Refuge: A refuge crowned with huge colonies of seagulls
• Abrams Animal Farm: Farm that features a variety of animals such as a small pony, donkey zebra, large turtle, emu, black pig, and more
• Saint Andrew Roman Catholic Church: New England style Catholic church with stained glass windows and statues)
• Lighthouses: North Lighthouse and Southeast Lighthouse
• …and a Sacred Labyrinth!
Visit Block Island, stay at Champlin’s, allow yourself to relax, and appreciate the beauty around you as you enjoy with loved ones. Champlin’s now holds such a special place in my heart and I cannot wait to return.
